Fires in vehicles pose a significant threat to life and property. Recently, fires in buses have been in focus due to catastrophic incidents for example in Germany. Train fires are also high on the research agenda due to recent European-based research projects such as TRANSFEU. A nightmare scenario is a large vehicle fire in a tunnel. At the same time new fuels and electrical vehicles are emerging in response to our need for sustainable transport alternatives. Such alternative vehicles introduce new fire challenges that need to be accounted for.

In response to the pressing need for international dialogue SP is organising a new conference: FIVE (Fires In Vehicles). The objective of this conference is to exchange knowledge of fires in vehicles, including both road and rail vehicles. In recognition of the fact that many of the fire problems faced by these vehicles are the same, the solutions to them can also be similar.

FIVE will bring together scientists, regulators, test engineers, industry, suppliers, insurance companies and other organisations from the diverse field of transportation to discuss important fire issues. We believe that this exchange of knowledge will significantly enhance economic and safe solutions – sustainable solutions – to problems in the fire area.

FIVE will be a biannual event, the first conference of which will take place September 29 – 30, 2010 in Gothenburg, SWEDEN. Gothenburg has been selected as the opening site for this event as it is the centre of the West Coast Region, the automotive science centre of Sweden.

Im Rahmen der Arbeit werden Brandversuche, analytische Lösungen und numerische Simulationen mit FDS, FLUENT sowie CFAST bzw. MRFC verglichen.

The 4th International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security will be held in Frankfurt, Germany, 17-19th March, 2010. Tunnel safety and security is a challenge for both private and public sectors. ISTSS provides a forum over 2 1/2 days to discuss current practice and emerging trends and research in the field of tunnel safety and security. The 4th ISTSS has the following themes: risk & security, human behaviour, passive fire protection & construction, active fire protection & fire fighting, ventilation and fire dynamics.

Each day will be opened by invited Keynote Speakers, leaders in their field, providing an overview of their topic of expertise as an introduction to the themes of the day.

Am 15. und 16. April 2010 findet in der Stadthalle St. Georgen zum fünften Mail der VIRTUAL FIRES KONGRESS statt. Der Kongress bündelt europaweit das Potential der Bereiche Simulation & Virtuelle Realität für Ausbildung und Training von Einsatzkräften und richtet sich an Fach- und Führungskräfte von Feuerwehren, Hilfs- und Rettungsdiensten, Institutionen aus dem Bereich Katastrophenschutz und der Polizei. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, internationale Standards aufzuzeigen, zu diskutieren und aktuelle Innovationen rund um den Themenschwerpunkt “vorbeugender Brand- und Gefahrenschutz” einem breiten Fachpublikum zugänglich zu machen.

The Second International Conference on Coal Fire Research (ICCFR2) will take place from 19th – 21st May 2010 in Berlin, Germany.

As a man-made hazard affecting limited natural resources in specific locales as much as the atmosphere at large, spontaneous coal seam fires are a delicate object of scientific research. Their very complex nature responds to a whole range of disciplines and necessitates a concerted interdisciplinary and international effort for effective mitigation.

The repercussions of the phenomenon spread right into the realm of society and politics. Coal fires are of relevance not only to scientists and mine managers but also to policy-makers and environmental lobbyists. Under the ever more pressing concern of global climate change, Berlin 2010 may rightly be seen in one trajectory with ongoing multilateral moves toward carbon reduction and management, including the COP15 conference in Copenhagen 2009 and its follow-up.

Ab dem Wintersemester 2010/ 2011 bietet der deutschsprachige Studiengang „Simulation Technology“ am „Stuttgart Research Centre for Simulation Technology“ (SRC SimTech) eine breite Grundausbildung in den Bereichen Mathematik, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften zur späteren Lösung von komplexen Problemen mittels Simulationstechnologien.

Im Rahmen der brandschutztechnischen Beurteilung von Neu- und Bestandsbauten, insbesondere bei der Beurteilung von Sonderbauten, werden zunehmend computergestützte Simulationen eingesetzt. Zum Nachweis der ausreichenden Fluchtmöglichkeit von Personen aus Gebäuden oder baulichen Anlagen werden seit einiger Zeit auch Evakuierungssimulationen verwendet. Einen Überblick über die derzeit auf dem Markt befindlichen Programme bietet beispielsweise das Review of Building Evacuation Models (NIST Technical Note 1471, 2005) oder Erica Kuligowski im Kapitel „Computer Evacuation Models for Buildings“ (section 3 chapter 17) der aktuellen vierten Auflage des SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering.

Das Institut für Industrie Industrieaerodynamik (I.F.I.) richtet ab April einen Weiterbildungskurs zum Fachplaner Entrauchung aus. In ca. 160 Unterrichtsstunden werden jeweils Freitags und Samstags an 12 Wochenenden in Theorie und Praxis Grundlagen der Entrauchung gelehrt.

Die einzelnen Themenbereiche werden von Dozenten und Sachverständigen des I.F.I.,  der BFSB und weiteren externen Experten vertreten, die alle eine langjährige Erfahrung sowohl in ihrem Sachgebiet als auch im vorbeugenden Brandschutz besitzen.

Bereits zum dritten Mal findet am Freitag, den 30. April 2010 das Basisseminar “Theorie und Numerik des Fire Dynamics Simulator” ausgerichtet von der INURI GmbH und Wissenschaftlern der FU Berlin statt. Das Seminar richtet sich an alle Nutzer des Programms Fire Dynamics Simulator, die durch das Verständnis der Theorie das Programm in der alltäglichen Praxis sachgerecht anwenden möchten.
