New ISO report on people behaviour and design (ISO/TR 16738)

ISO/TR 16738: 2009: ‚Fire safety engineering – Technical information on methods for evaluating behaviour and movement of people‚ outlines the engineering methods used for evacuation strategies as part of the fire safety engineering design for built environments – including tunnels, underground complexes, ships and vehicles.

Aimed at designers, regulators and fire safety professionals, the report represents information on the evaluation, quantification and management of occupant behaviour, particularly escape behaviour, during a fire.

ISO/TR 16738:2009 provides information on methods for the quantification of the different aspects of human evacuation behaviour in a design context. It addresses the parameters that underlie the basic principles of designing for life safety, and outlines the processes, assessments and calculations necessary to determine the location and condition of the occupants of the building, with respect to time.

The report – available from www.iso.org – is intended for use together with parts of ISO/TR 13387: ‚Fire safety engineering‘ and associated guidance, although it does not cover the use of lifts in emergencies.
